| I just read it on a magazine called Black Velvet (UK Mag) and there is this fan mail saying that POP PUNK should't be considered PUNK, but more on POWER POP.
Just wanna hear the reactions...

| I guess it depends on the approach to the music, the aesthetics and ethics by which a band that plays "pop punk" should be considered.
Bands like Crimpshrine, Operation Cliff Clavin, Fifteen, Schlong , and Screeching Weasel are well known and respected pop punk bands because they are caustic , melodic yet gruff and have DIY ethics. I would consider pop punk to still be punk because punk is a mutation of pop, it was a reaction to popular music because at the time , pop was sterile and unapproachable.
So for me , pop punk is still punk.

| one great thing bout punk is the fact that its what you want it to be. walang rules, walang boundaries. so yes, pop punk is punk because that's how i feel bout it, and that's how I want to consider it. My 2 cents | |

| YES. It may not meet the indie fascist regime's standards as to what they think punk is or what it should sound like, but in the big scale of things, pop punk is punk. I think what's more important, at least in my opinion, is if a band playing mainstream punk had at least at one point, underground credibility. Especially now, you see a lot of once highly respected indi punk bands signing major label deals, which can work to a band's benefit or totally destory them. If a band is really good and just wants to introduce their music to an audience that wouldn't have been able to listen to punk because, say, they live in a rural area , then I don't see anything wrong with that. I think kids living in the province have a right to good music too isntead of letting ABS-CBN dictate what's cool and what's not. I'd rather hear Dead Sperm on the radio then have to listen to Calilly every thirty minutes. Especially when the message borught to the table is politicallly or socially significant.
I'd like to see more local bands push the limit and be the itch on the governement's ass that GMA can't scratch and I think one of the only ways to do that is to take a few passionate punk bands that have something to say about what's going on in our country and take it to the mainstream. I honestly don' t think that's selling-out. Selling out is whoring yourself out to Myx to ensure the down payment on your 7th car when the 40% of the Philippine population is starving and not caring as long as you make your money so you can't buy more shit you don't need.
I love underground punk and always will. Occasionally my tastes lean towards more mainstream stuff I guess but I would really like to destory this whole punk purist mentality and because I think it's really fascist and unrealilistic.

| haha.

that's so not punk! punks are like real artist! they dont care who, what or how many digs their music. Its all in the form of music and the sets of belief. An anarchist, dissident, communist, lumpen proletariat, lntellectual dissident, atheist, agnostic, or anti social can be a punk. But a very bougeoisie capitalist oriented person will find it hard to be a punk. I even think rightist cant be punk. As Against All Authority says in their song- its a subculture of consciousness against the bourgeoisie society state. And the bands that can best express this subculture can be considered punk. I said bands not music that can express because two group of people can play the same intense beat and performance but one can be a punk, and the other not if the other does not play music for change, but just wants to be a rockstar. So can pop punk be considered punk? DEPENDS ON THE BELIEFS AND ACTIONS OF THE BAND MEMBERS!

this is also the reason why we have the word sellouts- people who used to think and act as punks then suddenly or gradually changed solely for the money.
