Save the date!
Join us on our CLIMATE ACTION FESTIVAL on OCTOBER 24, THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CLIMATE ACTION.

As in our previous climate action, this is a no drinking, no smoking, zero-waste ecological event. We also encourage you to share anything you can for the potluck, and as usual, to bring your own water bottles, utensils, and baunan.
Please come at 1:30 PM as we have a lot of art, music, food, knowledge, and inspiration in store for you.
Entrance is Free
We'll upload the venue, map, poster/s, and other details soon.
And here's what Claudia Chen of 350.org and Greenpeace SEA have to say about our October 24 Climate Action and our August 28 Climate Action, respectively:
"350.org is an international grassroots campaign that aims to mobilize a global climate movement united by a common call to action. By spreading an understanding of the science and a shared vision for a fair policy, we will ensure that the world creates bold and equitable solutions to the climate crisis.350.org is an independent and not-for-profit project.
What is 350? 350 is the number that leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. Scientists measure carbon dioxide in "parts per million" (ppm), so 350ppm is the number humanity needs to get below as soon as possible to avoid runaway climate change. To get there, we need a different kind of PPM-a "people powered movement" that is made of of people like you in every corner of the planet."

This is what sets apart the Philippine HC/PUNK scene from the American scene . . . it's more than what you wear or what bands you hang out with, it's what we can do to help make society better.

hi rupert. thank you. we are likewise very happy with the support we've been receiving from the hc/ punk community since our august 28 climate action - the launch of our local 350 campaign. we think this is indicative of a growing engagement in issues that go beyond the perimeter of punk concerns.
check out http://www.350.org . you might want to register an action on OCTOBER 24, THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CLIMATE ACTION. 192 countries will convene in copenhagen, denmark from december 8-17 to seal the climate deal that will not only decide the post-Kyoto future, but the fate of the world (and by extension, all its inhabitants). this is our chance to pressure world leaders (and perhaps, the corporations that buy them) to seal an ambitious, equitable and binding climate treaty.
as for the rest of you in the philippines, you can sign up for our climate action and receive updates by going to our action page: http://www.350.org/350now_pilipinas

Subject: climate week and global wake-up call day Sat Sep 19, 2009 10:53 pm
here is an excerpt from an e-mail i got from may boeve, partnerships coordinator of 350.org :
"In less than 24 hours, "Climate Week" begins--7 days of events surrounding a big UN Climate summit in New York. The summit's purpose: to get world leaders on the same page in advance of the crucial UN Climate Negotiations in Copenhagen this December. Climate Week will be a big deal--UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for this emergency meeting, and both Barack Obama and Hu Jintao will be giving landmark speeches." I'll be going to New York myself in just a few days, and as I prepare for the whirlwind of events, one question keeps nagging at me: At a high-profile, celebrity-studded, media-saturated event like Climate Week, how can we break through and make our voices heard?
On Monday, September 21st, I'm hoping you'll join me and people all around the world in doing both:
1) Make a Phone Call for The Global Wake-Up Call
350 and many of our partners in the new TckTckTck campaign are teaming up for the Global Wake Up Call--a set of 5-minute, distributed "flash-mobs" designed to put the pressure on world leaders the day before the big UN meeting in New York. In cities, towns and villages around the world, people will gather in public places with their neighbors and friends, not only to make some noise about climate change, but to make some calls. On Monday, September 21st, we will flood world leaders with phone calls, letting them know that climate change is a challenge like no other and that the world is sounding an alarm and it's time to pay attention and wake up. Join us: www.350.org/sept21
2) Watch a Movie for The Age of Stupid Global Premier
On the night of Monday, September 21st, The Age of Stupid--the new big-screen climate change epic--will be shown in cinemas in more than 50 countries. It will be part of the largest global film premier in history. It's the largest because YOU are invited--if you can make your way to a participating theater on Monday, September 21, you will be part of this historic event. We've all watched the film here at 350 headquarters, and we're convinced that it's just the film the world needs right now. As we approach the precipice of climate chaos--and an opportunity to pull humanity back from the brink in Copenhagen--this fictional epic (with a good sense of humor!) set 50 years in the future will remind you of how scary and important present-day reality actually is: www.350.org/sept21
Here's the deal: just like every other UN meeting, most of you won't be there at the negotiating table when world leaders sit down. But you CAN influence the outcome through these two easy--and fun--events. Yup, I said "fun" in the same context as "climate chaos." On September 21, all across the planet, you'll be able to see, and hear, the movement for climate solutions. I'll be reporting out from New York next week--and letting you know how we can use this surge in climate activity as a springboard.
Because after Monday, September 21, you know what happens--the International Day of Climate Action on October 24--now with new actions in countries like Bahrain and Burkina Faso..."

Subject: THE AGE OF STUPID Wed Sep 23, 2009 9:16 pm
We are giving a special screening of the documentary, THE AGE OF STUPID, on our Climate Action Festival on October 24, The Global Day of Climate Action. The documentary stars Oscar-nominee, Peter Postlewaithe "as an old man living in the devastated world of 2055, watching 'archive' footage from 2008 and asking: Why didn't we stop climate change while we had the chance?"
The film is not distributed commercially, though at some point, the producers will release this on DVD to recoup their investment of a whopping $400k+ for the D.I.Y. production (no corporate sponsorship, product tie-ins, etc.) of this documentary which was shot in five continents, spanning America, UK, India, Nigeria, Iraq, Jordan, and The French Alps.
We're privileged to have been invited to the global premiere (September 21 and 22) by Greenpeace, who is not our partner in this initiative, but has been very supportive of us. They are also going to have a green carpet gala on October 13 for the presidentiables (to interrogate their stand on environmental issues), DENR, NEDA, the business sector, and other relevant offices/ officials and individuals.
We are hoping that local theaters would carry this film because this is a very important documentary that drives the exigency of pressuring the 192 world leaders who will seal the climate deal that will determine the fate of the world in Copenhagen, Denmark during the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) from December 8-17.
But until then, you can join us on October 24 to watch this rare documentary, which is not available on torrent because it's not yet released on DVD.
Subject: Venue: PICNIC PAVILIONS, QUEZON CITY MEMORIAL CIRCLE Sat Sep 26, 2009 12:45 am
hi. the venue for our climate action festival on october 24 will be at the PICNIC PAVILIONS in QUEZON CITY MEMORIAL CIRCLE. yeah, it's the same venue we had for our august 28 climate action.
the fishing village (overlooking the lagoon) in ninoy aquino parks and wildlife is booked, and they close at 7PM, so we can't have it there.
anyway, we're going to put up sturdier and waterproof tents this time. and the admin promised to have the light bulbs checked and replaced so we can make use of the two smaller pavilions, one of which will serve as our food pavilion.
please let us know if you know anyone who's willing to lend us their tents (the kind that barangays have) in case it rains again. we need three.
see you on october 24! don't forget to bring your own utensils, food container, and reusable water bottle. oh, and some veg/vegan food to share!
watch out for the revised poster!
p.s. posero is also going to play.

Subject: how to get to the QC CIRCLE Sat Sep 26, 2009 3:14 am
as you can see, it's very ACCESSIBLE. you can lrt-mrt-bus-jeep-taxi-bike your way to the circle.
those who will get off the bus/ jeep at the QC city hall can take the underpass. that should lead you to the east ave. entrance (right across the city hall) of the circle.
those who will come from philcoa can take the overpass to the circle. the gate (right across commonwealth ave.) is just a few steps away.
as in our previous climate action, we will post markers/ this-way signs to the picnic pavilions so you won't get lost looking for the venue.
parking is only php 15.00. otherwise, EVERYTHING IS FREE!
free entrance, free vegetarian and vegan food, free water, free workshops, free music, free film screenings, free exhibit, free exchange of ideas, iconic venue, great cause, D.I.Y. to the core, SINCERE ADVOCACY, SINCERE ORGANIZERS (who have been planning this since the summer). so why go anywhere else on OCTOBER 24, THE GLOBAL DAY OF CLIMATE ACTION?

“The need to agree a fair, ambitious and binding deal for the climate in Copenhagen was further driven home this weekend as the Tropical Storm Ondoy, dumped a month’s worth of rain on Manila in just six hours. With the death toll still rising, and more than 280,000 driven from their homes, it reminds us that Southeast Asia is among the most vulnerable and least prepared areas to deal with the impacts of climate change.”

and yes, we're serving food and water to everyone. for free, of course. as in our august 28 climate action, we will serve vegan/ vegetarian (we also consider the special dietary requirements of our krishna friends) food, but we also encourage our participants to bring their own veg/ vegan food to share. even rice will be appreciated.
make sure to bring your own water bottle, your own baunan (i'm sure you have one at home), and your own utensils. we are against the use of disposables as we have designed our activity to be a zero-waste event.
make sure to invite your friends, family, classmates, and officemates! see you there!

mother earth foundation, a local NGO, will conduct the workshop on composting and zero-waste. while they usually do this for a minimal fee (since they normally do this in barangays), that was waived for us in consideration of our advocacy and of our sincere effort to educate our audience on such matters.
compost-making is not so big in the metro, but with or without typhoon ondoy, this is something we should start doing in our own homes, and mother earth foundation will do a demo of this.

What is the day of action?
On October 24, the International Day of Climate Action will cover almost every country on earth, the most widespread day of environmental action in the planet’s history.
There will be big rallies in big cities, and incredible creative actions across the globe: mountain climbers on our highest peaks with banners, underwater demonstrations in island nations threatened by sea level rise, churches and mosques and synagogues and ashrams engaged in symbolic action, star athletes organizing mass bike rides—and hundreds upon hundreds of community events to raise awareness of the need for urgent action.
Every event will highlight the number 350—and people will gather at some point for a big group photo depicting that all important message. At 350.org, we'll assemble all the photos for a gigantic, global, visual petition.
The thousands of events on October 24 will drive 350 and all that it represents into the human imagination, and change the negotiating environment as we head towards the crucial UN Climate Negotiations in Copenhagen in December of 2009. Copenhagen may well be the pivotal moment that determines whether or not we get the planet out of the climate crisis, and your actions on October 24 will help our leaders realize we need a real solution that pays attention to the science.

a lot of people asked me yesterday when the next activity will be, or if there's going to be any. i'm looking at december, around the time of the UNFCCC meetings where the post-Kyoto Protocol climate treaty will be sealed. but of course, i will have to consult my peers on this because we don't have sponsors and we reject the idea of both corporate and political (mainstream political parties and groups) sponsorship for a DIY activity (hence, do it yourself) . in any case, jay and i are open to the idea of having another activity because again, we envisioned this to be a sustainable initiative, as in every campaign. but we will let you know what our peers think.
i hope that we all have a sustained interest in and develop a commitment to ecological and climate justice, which is what the adoption of 350PPM (parts per million) stands for. let's hope that the UNFCCC meetings adopt 350 PPM as the global benchmark by which all carbon emissions cuts must be based on.

To the ever-reliable Non-Collective for donating, doing the marketing and the cooking, manning the food pavilion, and helping Jay wash the dishes and utensils.
To all those who came, participated in the activities, and showed their solidarity (especially to those who brought their own bottles, food containers, and utensils).
Thank you Santa Rosa crew (Mihara, DWF, HDG), Jaye, Chuck, Staid, Welly, Jep, N4S, Bhakti, Poison-free, Butch, Papao, Krist, etc.
We are rife with thanks to all those who believed in the cause and who helped us keep this D.I.Y. activity truly D.I.Y. - raw, unpretentious, sincere, and authentic. We wouldn't have had it any other way.
Except for some young punks who huddled in a corner to with their gin, we thank everyone for respecting the design of the activity - for keeping it smoke and alcohol-free, and understanding that it is deeply problematic and contradictory for an ecological and climate action festival grounded on conceptions of social, ecological, and climate justice to allow the consumption of such. So thank you for exhibiting lucidity in this regard, for not seeing this along ideological (straightedge) lines.

Saludo to Non-Collective and the people who have been down since day one. The challenge now is:
What do we do next?
Now that we know what is going on, will we move back to our safehouses? Hanggang saan ba tayo?

i think what janus raised is very important.
as in every campaign, initiatives need to be sustainable and consistent. the challenge, i think, is how to get people interested in something that is regarded serious, and ultimately, how to sustain that interest. on our part, we hope to see the same faces (plus new ones) in our succeeding activities.
we'll be glad to give you e-copies of the book i talked about in brief last sat. (collapse: how societies choose to fail or succeed by jared diamond), and the films we showed (the story of stuff and the age of stupid).
